This play changed my perspective and direction of my ain career equally an extra. Since reading Birch's play, which is both a feminist manifesto and experimental theatre piece in one, I have delved deeper into the history and electric current globe of feminist theatre. Cutting, Shameless, Cringed more ofttimes than not. I truly was non prepared for what this play had in store.
Revolt vehemently rejects the expectations and responsibilities assigned to and assumed by women - in the most delicious way possible. A accomplice of incredible female characters who simply do not give a shit.

As a woman myself, I found this play and so satisfying. The characters said and did all the things that, although cringey, had me rooting for them on the sideline. I vicariously lived through

Every bit a adult female myself, I found this play so satisfying. The characters said and did all the things that, although cringey, had me rooting for them on the sideline. I vicariously lived through these nasty women and flirted with the radical ideas presented in the play. Will definitely challenge yous. Enjoy!

It really is just staggeringly brilliant. Class as politics, language equally weapon, playtext as manifesto.

Maybe I'g just not that into absurdist theatre. Like this play, I struggled a lot with Caryl Churchill's Top Girls, mainly because I was reading information technology rather than watching it. Reading plays in this style might be harsh, merely I mostly encounter them every bit instruction manuals for a finished product, and in some ways reading them can spark off your imagination into all the dissimilar ways they tin exist performed.

Maybe I'm just not that into absurdist theatre. Like this play, I struggled a lot with Caryl Churchill'due south Summit Girls, mainly considering I was reading it rather than watching information technology. What mayhap is most frustrated about Revolt. She Said. Defection Again. is that I observe it very difficult to picture this finished production. In that location are stylistic techniques like stutterings, overlapping dialogue, and pauses put in past the playwright that I usually find annoying and unnecessary. And on the polar opposite of the spectrum at that place are a lot of things that are very vague virtually this play. Information technology'due south unclear every bit to who the characters are, or how many there are in any given scenes. No one even has names until halfway through the play, and and so the names go once again. There is definitely characterisation hither, just it's a nightmare trying to recognise them without any characters. I don't really understand the purpose of it, as a similar outcome could exist done with giving each character a letter or a number.

This isn't actually my matter. With the Churchill comparison, as much every bit I disliked Tiptop Girls I found that her piece of work, and absurdist theatre in full general, opened up to me a bit more with some of her other more zanier and funnier works like Cloud Ix and Far Away. And so I really hope that I'll read some other stuff by Birch that volition open me upwardly a bit more than, and if I did go an opportunity to see this I definitely would.

Holy. Fuck.

I accept never read something so seething, so brilliantly searing, as this play. Information technology is always a bit of a challenge to acclimate to Alice Birch'south writing mode (structurally, that is) only once I did, I was internally SCREAMING "Please SOMEONE, READ THIS! PERFORM THIS!" Since I don't have friends who are into theater, I've reserved all of my thrill for this review.

And I guess since no ane has dared to produce this in my area, I'll be doing that besides.

Thrilling, radical deconstruction of societal oppression of women and what it would take to start anew.

Plays like this 1 (in particular) are just so hard to rate or evaluate. This ones yearns to be seen or performed, rather than read. Characters don't take names, and even when they do, it's not all that helpful. There'south no stardom between who is supposed to be talking when. Mayhap a staged performance would help with understanding what was going on, what the relationships/dynamics between the characters ought to be? Despite my confusion, it is a actually fascinating play. Its style is reminiscent of Valerie Solanas--it's that pointed, sharp, breathy. Birch takes everyday situations (or are they?) and blows them to an extreme. It's feminist, only errs very much to the extreme. Possibly that'due south why I didn't vibe with information technology as much. Albeit, some of the moments are very well composed and idea-provoking. Just not really my thing.

Who knew that life could exist so atrocious.

The first act was absolutely fantastic, loved how the characters had no names, it created such a playfully chaotic space for exploration and I imagine in rehearsal a lot of experimentation could be done with the genders of characters/actors. Afterwards this the final scene is an explosion of applesauce which, I can imagine, to be powerful in person but didn't entirely work for me on text. That said, I think Birch, as she rightly said, didn't want to make sense and I somewhat enjoyed the sickening frustration of Birch'south ending cause past my encephalon simply desiring construction. This Rages. This is righteous. This is anarchic. This is absurd. And this deserves to be seen (it reads like it), but alas I've only read it... peradventure it's out on the intertubes somewhere? Anyway, very proficient stuff! Ends brilliantly, especially Acts iii & iv...

Rereading this is very helpful equally y'all are braced for the sheer level of experimentation, only as with all of Alice Birch's writing, information technology gets into your skin and delights in existence as uncomfortable as possible.

What it lacks in terns of humanity, specially when compared with her after play Anatomy of a Suicide, information technology more than makes upward for with its ideas that bound from our social expectations rather than generalising about them.

It is certainly a must read - it completely blows your mind when you are used to traditional drama. Fifty-fifty if y'all are familiar with mod plays this is something else ... I remember there are no words for information technology ...
It is exceptional!
Notwithstanding, merely three stars of five because I've read other plays which affected me even more.
Nevertheless, great play!

I was a bit nervous virtually this class reading because experimental theater is usually not my thing. Nevertheless, for the nigh part I plant this well thought out and extremely funny. I was not expecting the jokes to hit that difficult peculiarly considering I wasn't seeing information technology be performed. There were some odd parts I didn't get but I really was shocked at how hilarious this was.

Yep, this one was weird. Just a general notation: if your play has no characters and different parts are denoted past dashes, maybe bank check to make sure the dashes are in the right places?? We should non have to get a long e-mail from our instructor telling usa how to decypher the typos??? Still fun

This is at present my favorite play. All centered effectually the idea that girls who autumn in line seldom make history, the scenes seem random upon beginning read. However, subsequently having studied the text and acted out one of the scenes, I love to find the consistencies throughout it, seeing how information technology all connects. I would love to speak with Alice Birch about her thought process behind the play because the more than you read information technology, the more brilliant you discover the writing and the more questions you have.
